Red Seal Carpenters – who we are, what we do & why that matters to you
Unlike many other trades in Canada, carpenters are not currently required to have a Red Seal certificate to be employed in the trade, although it is an option. At Thompson Construction, we see the difference a Red Seal endorsement makes in our employees and the work they do, which is why we exclusively hire only Red Seal carpenters and apprentices.
The Red Seal Program, known formally as the Interprovincial Standard Red Seal Program, sets common standards to assess the skills of tradespeople across Canada. Once a tradesperson has successfully passed the Red Seal examination in their trade, they will receive a Red Seal endorsement on their trade certificate, indicating that the individual has demonstrated the knowledge and skill required for that trade’s national standards.
We are proud of our Red Seal status and the results it yields for our clients. Many of our licensed carpenters have been with us and have remained with the Thompson team since high school. We regularly work with students who are part of the OYAP program (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program). They are able to gain valuable hands-on experience learning the facets of construction while putting hours towards their carpentry apprenticeship.
A first-year apprentice is assigned as an apprentice with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. For the next three years, the apprentice will complete a combination of schooling alongside a required number of hours to fulfill the Red Seal requirements prior to taking the exam. The successful apprentice will pass the exam at which point they are officially a Red Seal carpenter.
